The Future of Serving Students in Higher Education
The COVID pandemic has forever changed the way higher education professionals serve students. Our incoming students spent their formative years in high school learning behind a screen. They missed out on traditional milestones such as proms, sporting events and for some even graduation. Because of the unpredictability at the time some students were not even required to take standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT. In addition, these students were witnesses of political turmoil and learned the power of their own voices when it comes to matters of social justice. Now in college, many students have grown accustomed to a virtual way of living, but as institutions we are trying to return to what we once believed to be ‘normal;’ reviving our in-person campus events, offering classes in person and providing students with the ‘traditional’ college experience. How do we work to assimilate this new generation of students whose lives have greatly changed and been shaped by the COVID pandemic? What role will technology grow to play in learning both inside and outside the classroom and how do we teach students to voice their opinions on matters of social justice in an appropriate and effective manner?
